Greed

-One of the book's main themes is greed. Greed is one of the issues that Bilbo has throughout the book. One of the main causes of crime in the world is the desire to have or own something that is not theirs. These ideas are some of the ones that cause problems for the main characters in this book.

-This book is about an adventure that the dwarves, Bilbo, and Gandalf undertake. The reason behind the dwarves and Thorin's adventure is because of Thorin's family history. A while back, Smaug, an evil dragon, had stolen almost all of Thorin's family's possessions. Thorin's family was very wealthy

at that time. Now Thorin wants to try his luck and get his families wealth back and to kill Smaug. His father had once tried to get their wealth back, but did not succeed in doing so. But with the help of Gandalf, Bilbo and others, Thorin just might be able to get his family's possessions back. Thorin was greedy, in a way, he wanted what he thought was his and he wanted it back. Will he be able to? How will he kill Smaug? The dwarves don't know how they will kill Smaug, but they are determinded to kill Smaug and get Thorin's family possesions back.

-Gollum is another example of greed. Bilbo had what Gollum called "his precious" and Gollum wanted it back. The ring had onced belonged to Gollum and had basically distroyed him.

one_ring2.jpgGollum was obsessed with this ring. This ring ran his life. Gollum became filled with greed once he had the ring in his possession. The so-called "precious" was a ring, a golden ring, a precious ring ring. Gollum wanted this ring because it was no ordinary ring. This ring had powers, and if you put the ring on, you would become invisible. He couldn't live without it. Once it was gone, he was consumed with grief. Because he was filled with greed, he wanted it only for himself.

-Bilbo also was a bit greedy. When Bilbo was looking for his friends after the finding the ring and meeting Gollum, he was using the ring. He found the dwarves, who were talking about him, and he listened in. Bilbo took of the ring and everyone was so amazed how Bilbo had crept up on them and the dwarves standing guard, without anyone knowing. Bilbo didn't tell them about the ring and its special powers of invisibility. He was being a bit greedy. He didn't want the others to know about the ring, thinking that they would take it away from him.

-In chapter 15, Bard says that Thorin should give some of his prize away. The prize being the treasure that they stole back from Smaug. Then later on in the chapter, men approached the gate and said that Thorin should give 1/12 of his fortune to Bard, who would then use that to help rebuild the city of Esgaroth. Thorin refuses because he is overcome with greed. He wants to keep his family's treasure for himself.

-When the dwarves were trapped in Smaug's cave, they sent Bilbo out. When Bilbo reached Smaugs dwelling, he wasn't there! Bilbo saw the light of the Arkenstone and followed it. When he found the Arkenstone, which he recognized from Thorin's description, Bilbo took the stone and put in his pocket. Bilbo thought that he would have to tell the dwarves about it eventually. This was the one thing that Thorin had come for, and Bilbo wanted it for himself as a reward. Bilbo was being greedy because he know this stone was important to Thorin, but he wanted it for himself. Bilbo also wanted a reward for all he had done for the dwarves. Did he only help the dwarves, so he could receive treasure?

- When Bilbo returned to his house from his long journey, people were in his house buying his stuff. This was a bit greedy of the hobbit's or other things to be selling and taking Bilbo's stuff without knowing if he was really dead or not! Bilbo's family was was just going to move in right away. 248px-Bilbo-ring.JPG

The ring did the same thing to Bilbo as it did to Gollum, they both became obsessed with it. This greed caused Bilbo many problems throughout the book.
